چکیده

Before 1900, the Missouri–Mississippi River system transported an estimated 400 million metric tons per year of sediment from the interior of the United States to coastal Louisiana. During the last two decades (1987–2006), this transport has averaged 145 million metric tons per year. The cause for this substantial decrease in sediment has been attributed to the trapping characteristics of dams constructed on the muddy part of the Missouri River during the 1950s. However, reexamination of more than 60 years of waterand sediment-discharge data indicates that the dams alone are not the sole cause. These dams trap about 100–150 million metric tons per year, which represent about half the decrease in sediment discharge near the mouth of the Mississippi. Changes in relations between water discharge and suspended-sediment concentration suggest that the Missouri–Mississippi has been transformed from a transport-limited to a supply-limited system. Thus, other engineering activities such as meander cutoffs, river-training structures, and bank revetments as well as soil erosion controls have trapped sediment, eliminated sediment sources, or protected sediment that was once available for transport episodically throughout the year. Removing major engineering structures such as dams probably would not restore sediment discharges to pre1900 state, mainly because of the numerous smaller engineering structures and other soil-retention works throughout the Missouri–Mississippi system. Estimation of the suspended sediment load in rivers with different hydrological methods (case study: Siahrood river in Mazandaran)

In a watershed, sediment arises due to the erosion and some factors such as pastures destruction, change users, no reasonable cultivation. That causes problems such as sedimentation in reservoirs andreduces their useful volume, reducing water quality in agricultural consumption; reduce the efficiencyof hydraulic structures and some other environmental problems. Changes in sediment load in a rive...

The rivers sediment load is determined using hydrologic methods. In the statistical methods, by measuring the rivers discharge and suspended sediment load in a long-term period, the relationships between the suspended sediment load and discharge is obtained. The aim of this study is to compare different estimation methods of suspended load and select the most appropriate relationship for the pr...

Comparison and evaluation of intelligent models for river suspended sediment estimation (case study: Kakareza River, Iran)

Sediment transport constantly influences river and civil structures and the lack ofinformation about its exact amount makes management efforts less effective. Hence, achieving a proper procedure to estimate the sediment load in rivers is important. We usedsupport vector machine model to estimate the sediments of the Kakareza River in LorestanProvince and the results were compared with those obta...

Information on suspended sediment variation in times of flood is important in management of water resources, particularly management of basins, and in investigation of the causes of erosion. The relationship between discharge and suspended sediment concentration during floods is not similar and homogeneous for different reasons such as precipitation variety, discharge rate and sources of sedime...

Classification of three formulae Lane_Kalinske, Bagnold, Toffaleti in Soolegan River using AHP

For selecting the most proper equation of sediment estimation discharge, there is a great need to evaluate them for the concerned river. In this paper suspended sediment estimation formulae in Soolegan River using Analytical Hierarchy Processing (AHP) is investigated. Three equations of sediment estimation Lane_Kalinske, Bagnold, Toffaleti were applied in this study. For estimating the amount o...
